DUI, Possession of Cannabis Charges Allison Madl, 22, of Evanston, was charged with DUI and possession of cannabis Dec. 22 after a traffic stop at 1:25 a.m. Niles police stated that Madl was seen swerving from her lane between the 6600 and 6800 block of Oakton Street. A traffic stop was initiated and sombriety tests given. After Madl was arrested, officers searched her vehicle and found a bag containing a green leafy substance and a smoking bowl, police reports state. DUI Arrest on Dempster Michael T. Ochonicki, 32, of Morton Grove, was charged with DUI after a traffic stop in the 7200 block of Dempster Street at 11:01 p.m. Niles police stated that Ochonicki was heading north on Harlem and was in the lane closest to the curb. Ruben Perez, 30, of Des Plaines was charged with retail theft Dec. 18 after police found two bags of fish under his jacket. Niles police were called to a store in the 8900 block of Milwaukee Avenue after two individuals with open alcohol were asked to leave the store, police reports state. When officers arrived they found Perez walking in the parking lot and made contact with him. Police reports state that the officer noticed that it looked like Perez was holding something. When the officer removed Perez's hands from his jacket, two bags of fish fell out. The bags of fish were valued at $20. Perez also was arrested under a warrant for felony DUI.

Police don't expect terrorism here, but cops in Morton Grove, Niles and elsewhere are training for reaction to NATO summit in three weeks. Since there's an alert out re: the bin Laden anniversary, the extra prep could come in handy.
North suburban police departments are training to back up Chicago police for the NATO summit May 20-21 – and to handle any incidents that spill out beyond the city limits. Since the Department of Homeland Security issued an alert for potential terrorism on the May 1 anniversary of the bin Laden killing, the extra training can't hurt. Vehicles were hit by Metra trains at the same intersection twice in a week.
The second court date for a man who allegedly left two cars on Des Plaines train tracks last year is Feb. 29 at Skokie courthouse, Journal and Topics Newspapers reported. It will be a status hearing. Theft: Approximately $6 was taken Nov. 22 from the locker at a fitness center in the 6300 block of Touhy Avenue. Criminal Damage to Property: Locks were cut off several trailers parked in a lot in the 6900 block of Austin Boulevard. Estimated loss was $130. Theft: A 10-1/2 ton Carrier air conditioning unit was taken Nov. 22 from the rear of a building in the 8100 block of Milwaukee Avenue. Estimated loss was $4,000. Retail Theft: An employee of a business in the 5700 block of Touhy Avenue noticed that security wires were cut and two cell phones were stolen on Nov. 22. Estimated loss was $1,000. Niles police will be out there to ensure public safety during the holidays.
The Niles Police Department asks drivers on village streets to watch their speed on residential streets. “The maximum speed limit does not relieve the driver from the duty to decrease speed when approaching an intersection or when special hazards exist such a pedestrians or bicyclists,” Police Chief Dean Strzelecki said. Unless otherwise posted, speed limits within the Village are 25 mph. The speed limit in the all alleys is 15 mph. In addition, speed trailers, unmarked vehicles and the assistance of volunteers to identify speeding vehicles on residential streets will be used to help with enforcement. He screamed 'Tase me, tase me!' when police arrived.
Police responded to a report of domestic battery on the 7600 block of Neva Ave., Niles, July 26, according to a police report. When the responding officer arrived on the scene he observed the offender, Christopher L. Phillips, 20, of Chicago, running out of the residence in a reckless demeanor, screaming “Tase me, tase me!” The officer requested backup units, and when other officers arrived the offender was handcuffed for his safety and the safety of others on the scene. One independent contractor punched another independent contractor in the face.
Dispute Police responded to a report of dispute on the 8000 block of Milwaukee Ave. July 27, according to a police report. The victim, a 22-year-old female from Niles, told police she became involved in verbal disputes over text messages with the offender, a 34-year-old female from Niles. It escalated to a pushing match and both received scratches. Both parties declined medical attention, and the victim did not wish to sign complaints. One incident involved an attempt to conceal gaming systems in plastic storage bin.
Niles police were busy making arrests after eight retail theft incidents occurred within a four-day period over the past week. Six people were taken into custody over retail thefts in the 8000 and 9000 blocks of Golf Road between July 22 and July 24, according to police reports. There were also retail thefts reported in the 900 block of Civic Center Drive on July 22 and at Golf Mill Center shopping center on July 25. Mayra Cuita, 34, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft for attempting to steal plumbing supplies from a business in the 900 block of Civic Center Drive on July 22, police reported.
