Niles Business Goes To Times Square

Local company The Bradford Exchange puts its Kate Middleton doll in lights.

A Niles company's name is up in lights on New York's Times Square, the world-famous plaza bursting with neon. The Bradford Exchange has a video billboard featuring its Royal Wedding commemorative products in the square. The company, known internationally for its collectibles, has issued a Princess Catherine collectible bride doll and replicas of the former Kate Middleton's engagement ring, as well as other memorabilia. "As the opportunity kind of presented itself, we said, 'where else do you get such a huge audience? It's international, too, because people are traveling," said Laura Fisher, the company's director of marketing. VIDEO: Company Creates Kate Doll By Noon On Royal Wedding Day

As soon as they got the first glimpse of the dress, they copied the look.

On Royal Wedding Day, it took just five hours for designers at the Bradford Exchange to copy Kate Middleton's bridal gown and put up a collectible doll for sale on the company's website. Bradford, which has been in Niles for over four decades selling artist- and artisan-created plates, dolls and other collectibles, mobilized 20 employees to come in between 3 and 4 a.m. to watch the wedding. They created the doll prototype in record time to capitalize on sales while fervor over the nuptials ran high.   "We had to do it quickly, and we had to make sure it was done superbly," said Leslie Joyce, corporate vice president and general manager of the Bradford Group.  They wanted to strike while spectators were still exuberant about the details of …

Is Kate Setting Wedding Fashion? Local Brides Say No

William's bride not creating a royal vetting for these women.

When Kate Middleton walks down the aisle to marry England's Prince William Friday morning, four Niles brides will not be watching. Oh, two will record the event. One will check out Kate's dress if she happens to see a photo. And the fourth couldn't care less.  But will Kate's choices influence the four brides, who are all due to be married in May and June?  Nope. It's a far cry from the 1981 wedding of Princess Diana, whose fairytale gown influenced bridal dresses for years. Kate who? "To be completely honest, I haven't followed her (Kate) at all.
