Regional Police Report: Teen Charged in Shooting Near Mall; Fatal Motorcycle Crash

The following police-related items appeared on area Patches this week. When an arrest is mentioned it should not be considered a conviction.

Skokie Teen Charged in Shooting Near Old Orchard Mall Criminal charges have been filed against Rayshawn Taylor, 17 , of the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue in Evanston, in connection with a shooting that took place outside Old Orchard Mall near the intersection of Golf Road and Skokie Boulevard. I didn't even know ANYTHING about this until reading about it in the Skokie Patch as well as from a friend who's a retired Skokie police officer who was on the scene due to a dinner he and his wife were attending at the Double Tree at Golf and Skokie Boulevard that night as I live right there at 4901 Golf Road at Barcelona and didn't even see or hear anything either as my apartment that I share …   more ›

Danny Pudi of 'Community' Speaking At Notre Dame Graduation

The comic TV actor, who graduated from Notre Dame in 1997, will be the commencement speaker at graduation Saturday.

Danny Pudi may have graduated from Niles' Notre Dame College Prep in 1997, but he's still attending Greendale Community College in NBC's comedy series Community. He plays Abed, one of a group of tight-knit friends who study together, in the well-written comedy series about life at a fictional community college. On Saturday, Pudi will take a break from life in Los Angeles, where he lives, to speak to Notre Dame's Class of 2013 at their commencement. Will he gossip about celebrities he's met in the world of TV glitterati? Tell tales of the funny men and women at Second City, where he studied? Or just reminisce about the balmy weather during Chicago winters while a student at ND?  As they say, stay tuned.  Like Patch on Facebook Notre Dame …

Local Veterans Face Long Waits for VA Benefits

As our armed forces come home from the Middle East, the local Veterans Affairs benefits office is being stretched.

Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home--long wait times for their disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically with location: about a year and five months in Baltimore, Maryland compared to four months in Fargo, North Dakota. The national average now stands at about eleven months, which is dramatically higher than in 2009 when it was four months. Data for the Chicago VA Regional Office shows that as of May 13, 2013, veterans waited an average of 501 days (…

Road Rage Incident Leads To Confrontation

Also, an 18-year-old was charged with stealing bottles of alcohol. An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.

Niles police responded to Oakton and Elmore streets for report of a fight in progress May 14 just after 12:30 p.m. They found two men arguing in the middle of Elmore, just north of Oakton. The offender, 51, of Niles, told police he had been driving eastbound on Oakton in the curb lane, saw that his lane was being closed off due to construction and tried to merge into the inside lane of traffic.  He said that instead of slowing down to let him merge, the other driver, a 33 year old Glenview man, sped up. The offender said he got angry and yelled at the Glenview man, who started to swear at him. Both pulled onto Elmore Street to confront each other. The offender said the argument was only verbal, and there was no physical confrontation. The …

North Shore Foodie Finds

Bring a Lake Bluff Brew to Your Memorial Day BBQ

A small batch brewery on the North Shore has some options for those of you looking to bring a delicious, local beer to your Memorial Day celebration.

Heading to a Memorial Day barbecue this weekend and looking to bring something more creative than buns or brats? Try some really tasty beer. After finishing an interview last week at Inovasi, I stumbled into Lake Bluff Brewery for the first time. Patch has written about these guys before, but I actually didn't know the place existed until reading about it as the final destination of an awesome day-long bike ride in the Chicago Reader.  It was around 5 p.m. on Friday when I walked in and the place was packed, but not too busy that the friendly bartender couldn't find time to let me sample a few beers. I tried the Derailleur first, since, for better or for worse, IPAs are typically my starting point. Then, I tried the Skull and Bones Double …
