  • On the article 20 Tips for a Successful Garage Sale in Skokie

Clearly you haven't read the Skokie permit for garage sales. You are only allowed one garage sale per calendar year. You are also only allowed ONE sign to be posted in your front yard. Garage sales are not allowed in the front yard or parkway.
Despite having a permit ($1) we were fined $50 for having a garage sale and posting signs. I think the best move would have been to attach them to our vehicles and place them around town. Regardless it was a terrible experience to have Skokie PD roll up and harass us, scare our children and make us feel like criminals for trying to get rid of our extra stuff.

Bottom line... Skokie is the worst place to have a garage sale.

So clearly from this cartoon the gunman doesn't care about the law. Why act as if an armed citizen would be helpless? The third missing strip from this cartoon is the businessman blowing away the crook as he makes his departure.

Is not the real story that the mayor is running un-opposed? I know they ran a story in April. But what does this say about local government. Is mayor Van Dusen really great, are people intimidated at running against his machine or do people just not care?

They've been patrolling Main St ever since the speed limit change. Handing out tickets like bubblegum. I drive this route daily and frankly 25mph is almost impossible to maintain. Hitting a pedestrian is less about speed limit then awareness.

I suggest we stay vigilant. Map the problem and shine light on the problem. The issues may persist but not if we protect ourselves and the community. People need to be made aware that there can be trouble after dark, home invasion is a reality and that Skokie PD can only be there after an incident if we don't give them the tips they need to do their jobs.

George, you're doing a great job. While you take some heat form time to time, you've kept your cool and stuck with it. Nobody is asking for a high tech solution. Take a picture of your map and we'll sort it out.

This is getting to be ridiculous. It's about time for the Patch to post a map with the recent violent crimes. Without a doubt we will see a pattern within the locations. I see many crimes happening in or around the same locations. I want to avoid these spots.

JC- If Lincolnwood officials wanted the range it seems Shore Galleries could have made the changes necessary to meet the expectations. Instead the whole project was scrapped. Why? Was this due to Shore or Lincolnwood? I seriously don't know. I don't see this as a radically different business model just an expansion of the business model. There are plenty of other range/retail outkets. I'm looking forward to Maxon's new range. Luckily DesPlaines is forward thinking.

Shore galleries provides a service supported by our second amendment. Guns can be dangerous in the hands of untrained persons. They are even more dangerous in the hands of criminals. People have a basic right to defend themselves and their homes. By panning and engineering a safe shooting range, Shore Galleries was creating a solution to the problem of armed civilians who are not skilled at shooting.
I have personally visited Shore galleries and talked with them about this situation. What Lincolnwood did was essentially pull the rug out of their business plans with no legitimate reason. To repeat my point- Selling guns is legal, offering training makes them safer. Blocking the planned shooting range does not make us safer.
