Upcoming Author Events at the Niles Library

Photojournalism: Chicago Style: Richard Cahan, retired Chicago Sun-Times picture-editor, discusses the importance of Chicago’s photojournalists in a timely slide-lecture format on Sun., Oct. 6 at 2pm. Earlier this year the Sun-Times laid off the paper’s entire staff of photographers and also those of its suburban papers.

The author of 12 published works including Richard Nickel’s Chicago, Real Chicago, and Chicago: Rising from the Prairie. Mr. Cahan will highlight the style and achievements of Chicago’s camera-journalists in capturing the events, large and small, that revealed the city and the 20th Century to America. Mr. Cahan is also an independent scholar at the Newberry Library and one of the founders of CityFiles Press in Chicago.

Mollie’s War: Cyndee Schaffer presents a slide-lecture based on her book, Mollie’s War, on Wed., Oct. 9, at 7pm.

Mrs. Schaffer’s account of a World War II WAC (Women’s Army Corps) enlistee who was stationed in England, France and then Germany, provides insight into the lives of the 150,000 women who served their country so well during the war.
