Shopper Test Drives Car, Then Steals It, Police Say

He returned with the salesperson after the test drive but found a way to keep the key. An arrest is merely an accusation not evidence of a conviction.

A service manager at an auto dealership in the 9400 block of Milwaukee Avenue told police that on Oct. 4 at about 8 p.m., a heavyset white male wearing a gray Chicago Bears t-shirt, dark jogging pants and a dark baseball cap test drove a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, according to police reports.

A sales associate asked him for his name, but not a photo ID card. He gave a common name and a 773 area code phone number, which later proved false, according to police. After returning from the test drive, the man went to the restroom with the vehicle key in his possession. He returned to the salesperson, give him a key, told him he needed time to think about the car, and left on foot. At about 10:40 p.m., he returned to the dealership and drove the vehicle off the lot, the report indicated. The staff realized he may have switched keys and given a different Ford key back to the salesperson.

The sales manager told police he would furnish security video. Police entered the vehicle into a database of stolen vehicles and are investigating.
