Lessons on Becoming Ourselves

This article is about how to reach our potential and become who we were meant to be through discovering and cultivating our gifts and talents.

The potential to become what we were meant to be is within each of us from inception, although not a sure thing that all people will reach their potential through the course of a life time. Just like the acorn when it falls on the ground, it is not certain that it might become a mighty oak tree one day. Human beings need the necessary inner wisdom in order to reach their potential. Our inner wisdom grows as we consciously pursue the path of discovering and cultivating our gifts and talents. Because we were all born with a calling, our destiny, our potential will not be fulfilled unless we live our lives in alignment with who we truly are, with who we were meant to be.

 A Mighty Oak…

Learning to become our best also takes some going against the grain. That means that we must question or test our inherited or learned beliefs about ourselves. Remember that you are the listener, not the speaker of your doubts! Do you feel your greatness in your heart and soul, or do you play old recordings that tell you how insignificant you are, how you will never amount to much, how inexperienced or how young or old you are to embrace your greatness and reach your potential?

The good news is that there are ways to work with our subconscious beliefs and become free of your “mind imprisonment." The goal is to take on new positive suggestions and disbelief the old, limiting suggestions. In a short time, you will find yourself reacting or acting differently in a variety of situations. Slowly, the emotional co-dependence on others will be replaced with a sense of inner strength and self-sufficiency grounded in the “knowing” of who are and what you are becoming. Following is an exercise used in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic-Programming), technique designed to help us change subconscious limiting beliefs.

 Building Better Suggestions Exercise

 1.  Take a piece of paper and a pen and create a lifeline with your most important experiences that left a mark on your life starting with your birth until today.

2.  Bring to awareness the negative belief you want to change. For example: “Who am I to believe that I accomplish this…”

3.  Think of a more useful suggestion that you want to believe. For example: “I trust my knowledge and experience and I believe in myself and my capabilities.”

4.  Imagine yourself floating back in time to when you were a young child and imagine hearing someone very convincing, who you really believed, saying this useful suggestion to you.

5.  From inside this experience in the past, imagine yourself going through your every major experience in your timeline with this new belief in yourself and notice how things change and how differently you feel in the light of this new belief.

6.  When you get to the present day, you can repeat this with different suggestions and notice how each time you feel better about the past and who you are in the present.

The more we practice with different suggestions and beliefs, the more liberated we become to who we used to be and become the person we were meant to be, ready to embrace our potential and align ourself with the calling of our Higher Self, our Soul. The acorn teaches us that we are born with the potential of becoming what we were meant to be.  To make it a reality, we must discover and cultivate our gifts and talents. We can all become a mighty oak tree if we choose to take the path of self-discovery. Desire coupled with action will take us where we want to go. Do you know your greatness you were born with?
