Plans have changed, and the Illinois driver's license facility which closed in Niles in May will move to Des Plaines.

The new facility will open in a mall at 1500 Lee Street, Des Plaines, which is just north of Oakton Street, in late October 2013, said Dave Druker, a spokesman for the secretary of state's office.

Original Story:

If you need to get your driver's license renewed, you may want to get to the Secretary of State's office at Four Flaggs Shopping Center in Niles on Tuesday or Wednesday by 5 p.m.

That office will be permanently closing Wednesday at the end of the day.  You'll have to go to Elston Avenue, Deerfield or Schaumburg to renew your driver's license or license plates until a temporary office opens on Golf Road in Morton Grove on Tuesday, May 21.

The following is a statement from the Secretary of State's Office:

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that a new, temporary full service Driver Services facility will open in Morton Grove on May 21. The facility will be located at 7927 Golf Rd. In the meantime, the Driver Services facility located in Niles will close at the end of the day on Wednesday, April 24.

The Office of the Secretary of State will soon be accepting bid offers for a new, permanent facility to replace the one closing at the Niles location.

“I am committed to providing the highest level of customer service to the people living in Niles and the surrounding communities,” said White. “The new, temporary facility in Morton Grove will provide a means to continue serving our customers while my office continues searching for the best and most convenient location in the vicinity at the lowest cost. I remain committed to saving taxpayer dollars while providing the customer service our citizens deserve and expect.”

Between April 25 and the May 21 opening of the Morton Grove facility, customers are encouraged to visit any of the following nearby facilities:

  • 5401 N. Elston Ave. in Chicago
  • 405 W. Lake Cook Rd. in Deerfield
  • 1227 E. Golf Rd. in Schaumburg
  • 650 Roppolo Drive, Elk Grove Village

Beginning May 21, the Morton Grove facility will be open Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m.– 5:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m.–noon. The facility will be closed Sunday and Monday.
